The Aufrichtig Family

This page and its featured links is dedicated to the memory of Ernestine [Theres] Aufrichtig, born 26 December 1876, died 16/17 May 1944

.

Ernestine [Theres] Aufrichtig was deported to Theresienstadt on 28 August 1942. With her in Theresiendstadt was her husband Rudolf Kahn, who died a month later on 30 September 1942. Ernestine spent 21 months there before being deported to Auschwitz KZ on 16 May 1944. While in Theresienstadt, Ernestine sent a series of postcards to her elder brother Josef Aufrichtig and his daughter, Hedwig. These postcards and copy of her original deportation index card are reproduced here.

The above postcard was written, presumably in October 1942, shortly after the death of her husband Rudolf Kahn on 30 September. Close analysis reveals that the name "Rudolf" was rubbed out and the word "Mann" substituted. The stamp was not franked at Berlin-Charlottenburg until 4 June 1943.

The above is a 'standard reply' postcard sent by Theres to her niece Hedwig Aufrichtig on 31 August 1943, acknowledging the delivery of a parcel.

The differing style 'standard reply' postcard above was sent to Theres' brother Josef on 17 October 1943. On this card she enters her name as "Ther. Ernest." [Theres Ernestine], whereas on all others it is given as "Ernestine".

The above postcard was written to Josef Aufrichtig on 23 February 1943, 12 weeks before Theres was deported to Auschwitz on 16 May 1944 [Ea-692]. The stamp, franked in Berlin-Charlottenburg, is dated 6 July 1944 - 51 days after Ernestine was sent to Auschwitz.

The above postcard was written to Joseph Aufrichtig on 4 April 1944, exactly six weeks before Theres was deported to Auschwitz on 16 May 1944 [Ea-692]. The stamp was not franked, however, until 10 May 1944.

The above 'standard reply' postcard acknowledging the delivery of a parcel, was sent to Theres' brother Josef on 12 May 1944 - just four days before she was sent to Auschwitz. The stamp was franked in Prague 41 days after her death on 26 June 1944.
